Bridal Event: Audey Trunk Show

A few months ago, I did a blog post about a Lill Event where Audey was going to have a trunk show. If I hadn’t had a prior commitment, I would have fought the Armitage Street traffic to see those gorgeous frocks. Lucky for Chicago Brides, they are having another event. Unlucky for me, because it is the day that I’m hosting my first day of Spring Brunch.

Wedding Myths

Myth #1:  Bridesmaid dresses can never be worn again.  They are awful.
Truth: Fabulous dresses like this Jenny Yoo dress can be worn again and again!  As I had mentioned a few months ago, I won a gift certificate to Jenny Yoo.  I ended up wearing this dress to a holiday party.  I received several compliments on it!

Myth #2:  No one is going to see your bridal shoes.  There is no reason to spend a lot.
Truth: Um hello, we are talking about shoes!   Of course you are going to see them. Photographers take loads of photos of bridal accessories.  I recommend getting a shoe in metallic color.  I chose to wear a deep champagne shoe that complimented my light champagne dress. My gorgeous de la Renta’s will be worn again next weekend!

My Jenny Yoo Dress

Who buys a bridesmaid dress when they aren’t a bridesmaid?

Um, that would be me. As I had posted in March, I won a $150 gift certificate to Jenny Yoo by Wedding Chicago. Last Saturday, I went to my appointment to try on some dresses. I was looking for something that I could wear to weddings that had pockets. (Pockets are a necessity for this wedding coordinator!)

After trying on many dresses, I fell in love with this one. It is perfect… but not really for my work as a wedding coordinator. It does have pockets though.

Since gem tones are going to be so huge for Fall, I was torn between Spruce and Grape. I decided to get the Spruce– they’ll go perfect with my Christian Lacroix pumps!

Jenna Bush’s Wedding

Is the monochromatic look of bridesmaid dresses falling out of favor? I love this look! It’s very modern and fresh looking!

The dresses above will be worn by Jenna’s attendents — she is only have one bridesmaid — at her wedding. Designed by Lela Rose, the picture came from a recent USA Today article. The article also highlights recent trends in the bridal world.

Apparently, my black bridesmaid dresses are out of vogue. Oops! It’s too late now.

One trend that is ending is strapless bridesmaid dresses. HURRAH! I am so tired of the look that is accompanied by the “fingers in your armpit as you hoist the dress back up” look.

What new trends are you loving right now?

Dress Shopping with the Maids

My plan was simple. We would buy three black dresses off the rack for my three bridesmaids that would be re-wearable. Since one of my bridesmaids was pregnant, we decided to wait until early January. Once she had her adorable little girl, Maggie, she wanted a few weeks to recover and then we could go shopping.

We met at Oak Tree in Bloomingdale’s for lunch. Beforehand, I checked out J. Crew. They don’t keep their celebrations line in the store and didn’t have any cocktail dresses either. Earlier in the week, I visited BCBG and found nothing that would work. Two stores were already crossed off the list!

After lunch, we hit up Bloomingdale’s. While we found a few possibilities, but ultimately, this season’s short hem line severely limited our options. I wanted the dress to be either tea length or floor length because my dress is so formal.

Our second stop was Black House White Market but we totally struck out. Our final stop of the day was Ann Taylor. The Celebrations Collection is amazing!

Everyone loved this dress. It is universally flattering as V necks with wide strap dresses are on most girls. I also like that you can see their red shoe.

The Long Strapless dress. It looked great on 2 maids but terrible on one. Who wants an unhappy bridesmaid? Once they tried it on, I was pretty set that I wanted a floor length gown to match with the formality of my dress.

At this point, we weren’t sure what to do. We left, looked at Nordstrom, and then called it a day. When I went home, I checked out Ann Taylor’s website and realized that there was another dress— the Christine Long!

Christine Long- The pearls and bun make the dress look a little prudish. I called up B. and asked her if she could go back to the store to try it on for all of us.

This is it! Christina Long is very chic and will look perfect for our formal evening.

Other details to keep in mind…

The dresses come with a built in sash. Since I don’t want them to be cookie cutter, I’m going to have them each tie the sash a different way. One maid loves this bow. Another plans to wrap it and tie for a minimalist look.

I also think a brooch in the middle of the sash is a great way to add some bling. I’m going to hold off on purchasing the brooches until I purchase their bridesmaid jewelry.

Another great detail– the ruby red Nine West shoes! Very sassy and makes the dress less bridesmaid-y yet just as formal.

Target– I love you!

As you may or may not know, Isaac Mizrahi has come out with a bridal gown line for Target. The line received a lot of press. To be frank, I didn’t care for it that much. At best, I thought that the gowns would be perfect for someone looking for a second dress.

Much less publicized was the line of bridesmaid’s gowns and bridal accessories. It’s pure genius. I saw the gowns up close and in person at a wedding a few weeks ago. The bridesmaids looked lovely!

The true genius of the collection are the accessories!

Veils starting at $15!

Sashes for $30!

Pashimas starting at $15!

Now if only Target would get rid of their terrible registery policies!
